This is Chaos , my best buddy and co pilot – me and Chaos have taken many road trips together , our most memorable would have to be the time we drove from Darwin NT to Albury NSW ( from the top to the bottom of Australia for those of you who have no idea where either town is ! ) It was a 4000 km trip and we did it in the troopy (an old Toyota land cruiser with no seats in the back ) sleeping on the side of the road. Also I must mention that I had no CD player , the radio in Outback Australia is not to be relied upon and noone sells tapes anymore … so picture me singing (badly) all the songs i knew the words to which wasn t many so I had a couple on repeat ( Tina and Ike Turner’s Proud Mary was one – I know wtf ? ) and good old Chaos howled along .. Either he is very intelligent or I’m an extremely bad singer ( I’m guessing the latter ).
I think the worst part of the trip was whenย I pulled into the tiny South Australian town of Woomera to order some dinner. I was going to keep driving to the next truck stop and set up camp as I had done for the previous 2 nights . While I was waiting for my dinner in the roadhouse/pub I noticed a missing persons poster . Upon closer investigation it turned out the man missing was Jason Richards who left Darwin a week before I had with his dog and his boat and hadn’t been seen since (unfortunately he was found a few weeks later and sadly was not found alive ) – he was traveling the exact route I was taking so this unsettled me a bit and I was very careful about where I slept from then on – I ended up staying at the road house that night and outside a family home in a country town the next . Anyway we made it to Albury alive if not nearly insane !! I will be posting more pics and stories from this road trip , I have so many they wont fit into one post !
Love it! My dog Lucy is my favorite travel companion–well, actually second favorite, after my partner Sara. I forget if you have read my post called “Canines in Conical Hats: Lucy does Vietnam.” I will try to stop by with the link. This post about traveling Vietnam with my Maltese is kind of fun.
Hugs,
Kathy
